... I don't really know what "it" is, or what's being kicked? Where did this turn of phrase come from?

I don't know if it came from anywhere.

[ surely it's in the interplanetary cultural zeitgeist--'how's it kicking' or some variation thereof--but it's not something caelus can pinpoint the origins of. ]

It's meant to ask how you're doing but keep it light.
